CORONERS: Provides with respect to the length of time coroners may retain a body
1 AN ACT
2 To amend and reenact R.S. 9:1551(B), relative to coroners; to provide for the time frame for
3 disposition of a body by the coroner; and to provide for related matters.
4 Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
5 Section 1. R.S. 9:1551(B) is hereby amended and reenacted to read as follows:
6 §1551. Disposition of remains
7 B. If a decedent's remains are not claimed, unclaimed, or abandoned, and the
8 decedent had known assets or property of a sufficient value to defray the expenses
9 of disposition, the coroner shall arrange for disposition of the remains within thirty
10 forty-five days, preferably by a recognized funeral establishment. The invoices for
11 the expenses of disposition shall be forwarded to the public administrator if there is
12 one in the parish or to the clerk of the district court if there is no public
13 administrator, and the person or official authorized by law to be appointed
14 administrator of the succession of the decedent shall provide for the payment of the
15 disposition expenses out of the assets of the decedent in accordance with the existing
16 provisions of law for the administration of successions and in accordance with the
17 provisions of this Part.

Abstract: Extends the length of time in which a coroner may retain a body.
Present law requires a coroner to arrange for the disposition of an unclaimed or abandoned
body within 30 days of receipt of the body.
Proposed law changes present law to increase the amount of time a coroner has to provide
for the disposition of the body from 30 days to 45 days.
