Plain English Breakdown

The official source material does not provide specific details on how vacancies are filled after a member leaves the board, only that it is consistent with existing law.

Firefighters' Retirement System Board Membership

This bill changes the composition and election process for members of the Firefighters' Retirement System board.

What This Bill Does

  • Changes the way five active firefighters on the board are elected: now they must have at least ten years of service and be picked by other active members, not just officers.
  • Removes two current board positions that were filled by the Professional Fire Fighters Association (PFFA) and adds one position for a member who is not part of PFFA.
  • Adds one new position on the board for an active member from the Louisiana Fire Chiefs Association.

Who It Names or Affects

  • Active members and retirees of the Firefighters' Retirement System in Louisiana.

Terms To Know

Deferred Retirement Option Plan (DROP)
A plan that allows firefighters to start receiving retirement benefits while still working, but without leaving their job.
Professional Fire Fighters Association
An organization representing professional firefighters in Louisiana.

Limits and Unknowns

  • The bill does not specify how long the new board members will serve.
  • It is unclear when exactly this law will take effect, as it depends on the governor's signature or lack thereof.
