Plain English Breakdown

The bill summary and digest do not provide specific details about the enforcement of the new rules, leaving some uncertainty.

Law to Protect Juror Information

This law makes it illegal for anyone to share juror information without permission, except under certain conditions.

What This Bill Does

  • Makes the personal details of jurors private and not available as public records unless released by a court upon finding good cause.
  • Allows courts to release juror information if someone shows good reason why they need it.
  • Sets fines or jail time for people who break this law, but does not apply these penalties to public bodies.

Who It Names or Affects

  • Jurors in Louisiana
  • Courts and prosecuting attorneys in Louisiana

Terms To Know

Public record
Information that anyone can see because it is kept by a government agency.
Good cause
A strong reason why someone needs to do something, like getting juror information from the court.

Limits and Unknowns

  • The law only applies to future cases and does not change past practices.
  • It is unclear how strictly courts will enforce this new rule.
