abandoned or blighted structures to install and maintain security cameras on property
1 AN ACT
2 To enact R.S. 40:1563(P), relative to abandoned or blighted property; to provide relative to
3 the powers and duties of the state fire marshal; to provide relative to abandoned or
4 blighted structures; to authorize the state fire marshal to require the installation and
5 maintenance of lighting and security cameras on such structures; and to provide for
6 related matters.
7 Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
8 Section 1. R.S. 40:1563(P) is hereby enacted to read as follows:
9 §1563. Powers and duties generally; use of deputies; responsibilities of local
10 governing authorities with fire prevention bureaus; open structures and
11 process structures; fees

13 P. The state fire marshal, or his designee, may require the owner or lessee
14 of any abandoned or blighted structure to install and maintain security cameras
15 capable of obtaining clear, discernable footage of every portion of the exterior of the
16 abandoned or blighted structure. The security cameras shall be capable of storing
17 and maintaining all footage for a period of not less than thirty days.

Abstract: Authorizes the state fire marshal to require owners of abandoned or blighted
structures to install and maintain security cameras on the property.
Present law provides that the fire marshal shall take all steps necessary and proper to protect
life and property from hazards of panic which may arise from fire or from the threat of fire
or explosion.
Proposed law provides that the state fire marshal, or his designee, may require the owner or
lessee of any abandoned or blighted structure to install and maintain security cameras
capable of obtaining clear, discernable footage of every portion of the exterior of such
structure.
Proposed law requires that the security cameras provided for in proposed law to be capable
of storing and maintaining all footage for a period of at least 30 days.
