1 AN ACT
2 To amend and reenact R.S. 16:51(A), relative to assistant district attorneys; to provide for
3 the number of assistant district attorneys in each judicial district; to provide for an
4 effective date; and to provide for related matters.
5 Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
6 Section 1. R.S. 16:51(A) is hereby amended and reenacted to read as follows:
7 §51. Assistant district attorneys
8 A. The district attorney of each judicial district and of the parish of Orleans
9 shall appoint a first assistant district attorney and such other assistant district
10 attorneys for his respective judicial district or for the parish of Orleans as may be
11 necessary, the total number of assistant district attorneys in each judicial district and
12 in the parish of Orleans to be not less than the following:
13 (1) In the First Judicial District, thirty-five thirty-nine assistant district
14 attorneys;
15 (2) In the Second Judicial District, ten assistant district attorneys;
16 (3) In the Third Judicial District, nine ten assistant district attorneys;
17 (4) In the Fourth Judicial District, twenty-six twenty-seven assistant district
18 attorneys;
19 (5) In the Fifth Judicial District, seven eight assistant district attorneys;
20 (6) In the Sixth Judicial District, seven eight assistant district attorneys;

25 attorneys;

1 (27) In the Twenty-Seventh Judicial District, twelve fifteen assistant district
2 attorneys;
3 (28) In the Twenty-Eighth Judicial District, three assistant district attorneys;

14 (38) In the parish of Orleans, eighty-three seventy-three assistant district
15 attorneys;
16 (39) In the Thirty-Eighth Judicial District, two assistant district attorneys;
17 (40) In the Thirty-Ninth Judicial District, two assistant district attorneys;
18 (41) In the Fortieth Judicial District, nine ten assistant district attorneys;
19 (42) In the Forty-Second Judicial District, four five assistant district attorneys.
20 Section 2. The provisions of Section 1 shall become effective when an Act of the
21 Louisiana Legislature containing a specific appropriation of monies for the implementation
22 of the provisions of this Act becomes effective.
23 Section 3. In accordance with the provisions of R.S. 16:54, any additional changes
24 in the number of assistant district attorneys as provided by this Act which were not approved
25 by the Governor's Advisory and Review Commission on April 12, 2026, shall become
26 effective upon recommendation by the commission that such additional assistant district
27 attorneys satisfy the applicable guidelines in its report to the governor and the Louisiana
28 Legislature.
29 Section 4. The provisions of this Section and Section 2 shall become effective upon
30 signature by the governor or, if not signed by the governor, upon expiration of the time for

1 bills to become law without signature by the governor, as provided by Article III, Section
2 18 of the Constitution of Louisiana. If vetoed by the governor and subsequently approved
3 by the legislature, the provisions of this Section shall become effective on the day following
4 such approval.
