1 AN ACT
2 To amend and reenact R.S. 13:5581(A), relative to the sheriff for the parish of Orleans; to
3 provide for the sheriff's term of office; to provide for the term of office for the sheriff
4 elected at the election for parochial or municipal officer in Orleans Parish in 2029;
5 to provide for the beginning of the term of office for each sheriff elected thereafter;
6 and to provide for related matters.
7 Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
8 Section 1. R.S. 13:5581(A) is hereby amended and reenacted to read as follows:
9 §5581. Sheriff for parish of Orleans; election; term
10 A. There shall be one sheriff for the parish of Orleans, who shall be elected
11 by the qualified electors of the parish of Orleans. He shall be elected at the election
12 for parochial and municipal officers in Orleans Parish, and shall serve for a term of
13 four years, and shall take office and begin his term on the first Monday in May
14 following his election. However, the sheriff elected at the election for parochial and
15 municipal officers in Orleans Parish in 2029 shall serve until his successor takes
16 office on January 9, 2034. Each sheriff elected thereafter shall take office on the
17 second Monday in January following election.
