CRIME: Provides relative to penalties for drag racing and racing on public roads
1 AN ACT
2 To amend and reenact R.S. 32:65(F), relative to illegal speed contests; to provide relative
3 to drag racing and racing on public roads; to provide relative to penalties; to increase
4 the amount of days for which a car is impounded; and to provide for related matters.
5 Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
6 Section 1. R.S. 32:65(F) is hereby amended and reenacted to read as follows:
7 §65. Drag racing and racing on public roads and certain property; exemptions

9 F. Any law enforcement agency authorized to enforce traffic regulations in
10 this state shall have the authority to impound, at the owner's expense, any vehicle
11 driven in a manner that violates this Section for up to fourteen not less than thirty
12 days to gather evidence pertaining to the offense. If the owner of the vehicle has not
13 violated this Section, that owner may claim the vehicle from the impound facility
14 once notified by law enforcement. In addition, if the vehicle driven in a manner that
15 violates this Section has been rented from a car rental agency, only the driver of the
16 vehicle shall be subject to higher fines and the total cost of impound fees. The car
17 rental agency, or person who owns the vehicle, may claim the vehicle from the
18 impound facility once notified by law enforcement.
