BY REPRESENTATIVES WILDER AND DICKERSON AND SENATOR HODGES
ATHLETICS: Requests the Louisiana High School Athletic Association to recognize dance,
cheer, and lacrosse as sanctioned sports
1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
2 To urge and request the Louisiana High School Athletic Association to recognize dance,
3 cheer, and lacrosse as sanctioned sports for the purpose of interscholastic athletic
4 competition and all other opportunities available to participants in sanctioned sports.
5 WHEREAS, the sports sanctioned for interscholastic competition by the Louisiana
6 High School Athletic Association are baseball, basketball, bowling, cross country, football,
7 golf, gymnastics, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, powerlifting, soccer,
8 softball, swimming, tennis, volleyball, and wrestling; and
9 WHEREAS, sanctioned sports have eligibility rules and academic requirements,
10 formal oversight and governance, insurance and health and safety requirements, scholarship
11 and award opportunities, standardized seasons and scheduling, fundraising, and name,
12 image, and likeness opportunities; and
13 WHEREAS, dance, cheer, and lacrosse are challenging activities that require strong
14 athletic ability and dedication; and
15 WHEREAS, Louisiana's student athletes deserve the opportunity to compete in
16 interscholastic competition in dance, cheer, and lacrosse as sports that are officially
17 sanctioned by the Louisiana High School Athletic Association.
18 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
19 urge and request the Louisiana High School Athletic Association to recognize dance, cheer,
20 and lacrosse as sanctioned sports for the purpose of interscholastic athletic competition and
21 all other opportunities available to participants in sanctioned sports.
22 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
23 executive director of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association.
