HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 36
BY REPRESENTATIVE YOUNG
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
To commend Grambling State University on the celebration of the one hundred twenty-fifth
anniversary of its founding and to recognize its enduring contributions to higher
education, leadership, and public service in the state of Louisiana and beyond.
WHEREAS, Grambling State University opened on November 1, 1901, as the
Colored Industrial and Agricultural School; and
WHEREAS, the institution was founded through the efforts of the North Louisiana
Colored Agriculture Relief Association, which was organized in 1896 by African American
farmers seeking to establish educational opportunities for African Americans in their region
of Louisiana; and
WHEREAS, in response to the association's request for assistance, Booker T.
Washington sent Charles P. Adams to help organize the school, and Adams became its
founding president; and
WHEREAS, in 1905, the institution moved to its present location in Grambling,
Louisiana, where it has continued for generations to educate students and serve communities
throughout this state, the nation, and the world; and
WHEREAS, over the course of its distinguished history, the institution evolved in
name and mission and was designated Grambling State University in 1974, while remaining
steadfast in its commitment to academic excellence, opportunity, and service; and
WHEREAS, for one hundred twenty-five years, Grambling State University has
stood as a proud and enduring symbol of access, achievement, and perseverance and has
made an immeasurable impact through the education of generations of students and the
preparation of leaders in countless professions and fields of service; and

WHEREAS, the university continues to be guided by its well-known motto, "Where
Everybody is Somebody", which is a guiding principle that reflects its longstanding
commitment to human dignity, educational opportunity, and the development of every
student; and
WHEREAS, the celebration of Grambling State University's one hundred
twenty-fifth anniversary is an appropriate opportunity to recognize the school's historic
legacy and continuing importance to the people of Louisiana.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
commend Grambling State University upon the celebration of the one hundred twenty-fifth
anniversary of its founding and does hereby recognize the university for its extraordinary
and lasting contributions to higher education, leadership, and public service.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby extend
its sincere best wishes to the students, faculty, staff, alumni, administration, and supporters
of Grambling State University as they commemorate this historic milestone and continue the
institution's proud legacy of excellence.
