A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
To commend Grambling State University on the celebration of the centennial of the World
Famed Tiger Marching Band and to recognize its outstanding contributions to music,
education, culture, and the state of Louisiana.
WHEREAS, Grambling State University celebrates the centennial of the World
Famed Tiger Marching Band in 2026 and marks one hundred years of demonstrating
excellence in musical performances; and
WHEREAS, the World Famed Tiger Marching Band was established in 1926 when
President Charles P. Adams requested Ralph Waldo Emerson Jones to organize a marching
band for the institution; Jones started the endeavor with only seventeen instruments and
created the foundation for a proud and enduring musical tradition; and
WHEREAS, the World Famed Tiger Marching Band has grown from humble
beginnings into one of the most distinguished collegiate marching bands in the nation and
has long served as a premier ambassador for Grambling State University and the state of
Louisiana; and
WHEREAS, renowned director Conrad Hutchinson, Jr., took the helm in 1952 and
elevated the band to new heights of precision, discipline, and artistry; under his leadership,
the band became widely known as "The Best Band in the Land"; and
WHEREAS, the World Famed Tiger Marching Band has earned national and
international recognition through its performances on some of the most prominent stages in
the world; the band has showcased its legendary talents at major collegiate and professional
sporting events, including a historic appearance at Super Bowl I, and other national events,
including United States presidential inaugural parades and inaugural events; it has performed
internationally and been featured in major motion pictures and national media; and

WHEREAS, the band continues to showcase musical excellence, cultural pride, and
the distinctive tradition of historically Black college and university marching bands, and it
has inspired generations of audiences across Louisiana, the nation, and the world; and
WHEREAS, the World Famed Tiger Marching Band has long been an integral part
of the tradition and pageantry of the Bayou Classic, which is one of Louisiana's most
celebrated cultural and collegiate events; and
WHEREAS, the band is committed to discipline, artistry, and excellence, and has
provided generations of students with opportunities for musical achievement, leadership
development, and service to the university; and
WHEREAS, the World Famed Tiger Marching Band continues to serve as a source
of pride and unity for students, alumni, faculty, staff, and supporters and remains an
enduring symbol of the heritage and spirit of Grambling State University; and
WHEREAS, the celebration of the centennial of the World Famed Tiger Marching
Band is a fitting occasion to recognize and honor the directors, student musicians, staff,
alumni, and supporters whose dedication and talent have sustained this proud legacy for one
hundred years.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
commend Grambling State University upon the celebration of the centennial of the World
Famed Tiger Marching Band and does hereby recognize its outstanding contributions to
music, education, culture, and the proud heritage of the state of Louisiana.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby extend
its sincere best wishes to the directors, student musicians, staff, alumni, administration, and
supporters of the World Famed Tiger Marching Band as they commemorate this historic
milestone and continue their tradition of excellence for generations to come.
