HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 8

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
To commend Drew Brees for being elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
WHEREAS, Drew Brees was a standout high-school football player in Austin,
Texas, leading his team to a state title and receiving the Texas 5A Offensive Player of the
Year honors in 1996; and
WHEREAS, as a three-year starting quarterback at Purdue University in West
Lafayette, Indiana, Mr. Brees set both school and Big Ten Conference records in nearly
every major passing category, including passing yards and touchdowns; in his senior season,
he led the Boilermakers to their first Rose Bowl berth in thirty-four years and finished third
in the voting for the Heisman Trophy; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Brees was selected by the San Diego Chargers with the first pick
of the second round of the 2001 NFL Draft and became the franchise's starting quarterback
in his second season; during the 2004 season, he led the Chargers to a surprising 12-4 record
and received the NFL's Comeback Player of the Year Award and Pro Bowl honors; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Brees signed a free agent deal with New Orleans before the 2006
season and helped lead the Saints to a 10-6 record and a berth in the NFC Championship
Game; he led the league in passing yards that year and received first-team All-Pro honors
for his performance; in 2008, he tallied 5,069 passing yards and was voted to participate in
the Pro Bowl; and
WHEREAS, during the 2009 season, Mr. Brees set an NFL record by completing
70.6 percent of his passes and led the Saints to a franchise-record 13-0 start to the season;
most importantly, he guided the team to its first-ever Super Bowl berth in Super Bowl XLIV,
which resulted in a Saints victory over the Indianapolis Colts; during the Super Bowl, he
completed a thirty-two passes and passed for two hundred eighty-eight yards and two
touchdowns and was named the Super Bowl MVP; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Brees had another record-setting season in 2011, breaking Dan
Marino's single-season passing yardage record by finishing the season with 5,476 passing
yards; he also broke his own league record for passing completion percentage by completing

71.2 percent of his passes, and he established an all-time NFL record by passing for more
than three hundred yards in thirteen consecutive games; and
WHEREAS, in 2012, Mr. Brees broke Johnny Unitas' record for most consecutive
games with a touchdown pass, finishing with at least one touchdown pass in fifty-four
consecutive regular season games; he also finished the 2012 season with 5,177 passing yards
and a league-high forty-three touchdown passes; and
WHEREAS, in 2013, Mr. Brees passed for a league-high 5,162 yards, and in 2014,
he finished with 4,952 passing yards; he led the league in passing yardage during the 2015
and 2016 seasons, finishing with 4,870 yards and 5,280 yards, respectively; and
WHEREAS, in 2017, Mr. Brees helped guide the Saints to an eleven-win season and
the NFC South division title; he began the 2018 season in historic fashion, setting the NFL
record for all-time pass completions and all-time passing yards; he finished the 2018 season
with 3,992 passing yards and thirty-two touchdown passes; he also set a new NFL single-
season record by completing 74.4 percent of his pass attempts; in December 2019, he broke
the NFL record for career touchdown passes; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Brees announced his retirement on March 14, 2021, and he was
announced as a first ballot inductee into the Pro Football Hall of Fame at the NFL Honors
ceremony on February 5, 2026; and
WHEREAS, Drew Brees is an iconic quarterback who, through his achievements as
a New Orleans Saint, has become a part of the cultural fabric of the Crescent City and the
state of Louisiana; he is truly most deserving of the highest recognition.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
commend Drew Brees for being elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame; does hereby
extend enduring gratitude for leading the Saints to the team's first Super Bowl victory in
2010 and revitalizing the city of New Orleans during its recovery from Hurricane Katrina;
and does hereby extend sincere wishes that he remain prosperous in all of his endeavors.
