HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 16
BY REPRESENTATIVE CARPENTER
A RESOLUTION
To designate Tuesday, April 14, 2026, as Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated, Day
at the capitol.
WHEREAS, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated, was founded on
November 12, 1922, on the campus of Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana, by seven
visionary educators who established an organization grounded in the principles of sisterhood,
scholarship, and service; and
WHEREAS, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority is an international, nonprofit organization
with more than one hundred thousand members and over five hundred chapters globally that
serve communities across the United States and internationally; and
WHEREAS, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority chapters and members are actively
involved in their local communities through participation in national sorority programs,
including Operation Big Book Bag, Youth Symposium, Women's Wellness, Swim 1922, and
Project Cradle Care, which address critical issues impacting youth, families, and
communities; and
WHEREAS, in addition to these national initiatives, chapters across the state of
Louisiana participate in and lead local programs and community partnerships that provide
mentorship, scholarships, health education, service opportunities, and resources that support
individuals and families within their communities; and
WHEREAS, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority encourages its members to activate their
leadership and voices through civic engagement and legislative advocacy and promotes
informed participation in the democratic process to advance policies that strengthen families
and communities; and

WHEREAS, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority members from across Louisiana are
visiting the Louisiana State Capitol to engage with state leaders and policymakers and to
highlight legislative priorities that advance civic engagement, education reform and equity,
women and children's health equity and safety, and economic empowerment for families and
communities across the state of Louisiana; and
WHEREAS, the sorority's motto, "Greater Service, Greater Progress," reflects its
enduring dedication to uplifting communities and advancing opportunities for current and
future generations.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby designate Tuesday, April 14, 2026, as Sigma Gamma
Rho Sorority, Incorporated, Day at the capitol and does hereby commend the members of
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated, for their historic legacy of service, leadership,
and advocacy on behalf of the citizens of this state.
