BY REPRESENTATIVE BRAUD
A RESOLUTION
To designate Wednesday, March 18, 2026, as Plaquemines Parish Day at the state capitol.
WHEREAS, Plaquemines Parish is home to more than twenty-three thousand
residents, is the site of many historic events, and serves an important role in the oil and trade
industries; Plaquemines Parish was the first place in the United States where shippers used
a container for cargo in foreign trade; and
WHEREAS, Plaquemines Parish is located along the last seventy miles of the
Mississippi River, and it is the parish with the most combined land and water area in
Louisiana; and
WHEREAS, the parish became known as Plaquemines after the French name for
their military post, "piakimin", which means persimmon, a name given because of the
numerous persimmon trees nearby; and
WHEREAS, Fort Jackson is a major historical site in the parish, dating back to 1822
and built pursuant to a recommendation from General Andrew Jackson; the fort was used
continually as a military site until World War I and remains in use as a cultural event center;
and
WHEREAS, Plaquemines Parish has significant seafood and citrus industries and is
the largest crude oil producing parish in Louisiana; the parish is home to Plaquemines Port,
one of the largest ports in the United States and the site of Venture Global's Plaquemines
LNG, Chevron Oronite, United Bulk Terminals, and the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve
Base New Orleans; and

WHEREAS, Kristin Nash reigns as the 79th Orange Queen with great distinction and
dedication; Emmie Gondrella reigns as Teen Orange Queen, and Mia Brown holds the title
of Orange Blossom over the Plaquemines Parish Orange Festival; and
WHEREAS, the royal court of Kadence Johnson, 2026 Seafood Queen, Brynly
Newby, Teen Seafood Queen, and Demi Panepinto, Seafood Pearl, reign over the
Plaquemines Parish Seafood Festival.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby designate Wednesday, March 18, 2026, as Plaquemines
Parish Day at the state capitol and does hereby encourage all Louisianians to join in
celebrating the parish's wonderful contributions to the state.
