A RESOLUTION
To express the sincere and heartfelt condolences of the House of Representatives upon the
death of Derek Scott.
WHEREAS, it is with the utmost sorrow and deepest regret that the House of
Representatives of the Legislature of Louisiana has learned of the passing, on December 21,
2025, of Derek Scott; and
WHEREAS, Derek was the inspiring and cherished son of State Representative
Rhonda Gaye Butler; he was known for his gentle spirit and inimitable personality and the
way he made powerful connections with people simply by being himself; and
WHEREAS, Derek brought an immeasurable amount of joy, purpose, and
unconditional love into his family's life; though his life was too short, it radiated with an
unparalleled degree of meaning; he gave his family and loved ones countless moments that
will be treasured for generations to come, and his memory will provide them with guidance
and comfort as they mourn his passing; and

WHEREAS, Derek was beloved by the staff and caretakers at St. Mary's Training
School in Alexandria, Louisiana, where he was faithfully cared for with compassion,
dedication, and kindness for more than twenty years; and
WHEREAS, Derek is survived by his loving parents, State Representative Rhonda
Gaye Butler and Frank Butler; stepsisters, Millicent Johnson and Demi Butler; stepbrother,
Jared Leger; and grandparents, Samuel and Cheryl Leger; and
WHEREAS, Derek Scott was a deeply loved young man who lit up countless lives,
and though he will be deeply missed, his memory is forever etched into the hearts of those
who were privileged to have known and loved him.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby express sincere and heartfelt condolences on the death
of Derek Scott and does hereby extend sincere wishes that his family, friends, and loved
ones find comfort in knowing that his spirit lives on forever through their shared memories
of his inspiring life.
