A RESOLUTION
To designate Monday, March 23, 2026, as CODOFIL Day at the state capitol.
WHEREAS, the Council for the Development of French in Louisiana (CODOFIL)
was created by Act No. 409 of the 1968 Regular Session of the Legislature of Louisiana to
promote, preserve, and develop the use of French across the state and to ensure the
language's continued role in shaping the state's future and identity; and
WHEREAS, today, CODOFIL is housed within the Louisiana Department of
Culture, Recreation and Tourism, under the Office of Cultural Development; and
WHEREAS, Louisiana is the only state in the country with an official government
agency that is dedicated to the advancement of French, and CODOFIL has worked for over
nearly six decades to support the French language in education, cultural programming,
tourism, international relations, and economic development; and
WHEREAS, Louisiana's efforts to sustain its brand and ensure its cultural vibrancy
for future economic growth are predicated on its robust bilingual educational system and
continued relations with international partners, including France, Belgium, Quebec, Ontario,
New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia; and
WHEREAS, CODOFIL has played a key role in the creation and continued impact
of several important Louisiana initiatives, including Festivals Acadiens et Créoles, Festival
International de Louisiane, French immersion education in the state's public schools, and the
state's continued engagement with the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie; and
WHEREAS, Louisiana is the first state in the United States to be accepted into the
Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie, an organization of ninety-three French
countries from around the world that represents three hundred twenty-one million French-
speaking people; and

WHEREAS, as Louisiana's state agency for Francophone affairs, CODOFIL
continuously nurtures and grows international partnerships, and these partnerships have
resulted in economic growth for the state.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby designate Monday, March 23, 2026, as CODOFIL Day
at the state capitol and does hereby commend CODOFIL for its enduring contributions to
the cultural identity and economic success of Louisiana.
