HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 86

A RESOLUTION
To designate the month of April as Landscape Architecture Month and April first as
Professional Landscape Architecture Day.
WHEREAS, landscape architecture encompasses the analysis, planning, design, and
stewardship of the natural and built environment and translates vision into action to shape
places that are healthy, resilient, and designed for everyone; and
WHEREAS, Professional Landscape Architecture Day celebrates the licensed
professionals whose expertise in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)
is essential to the infrastructure and quality of life in Louisiana; and
WHEREAS, Landscape Architecture Month is celebrated annually in April under the
theme Landscape Architecture in Action and recognizes the profession's tangible impact on
parks, streetscapes, shorelines, schools and campuses, and public spaces across urban,
suburban, and rural communities; and
WHEREAS, as the United States approaches America 250, it is fitting to recognize
that landscape architects have historically shaped and stewarded the American landscape and
created enduring places that embody democratic values and cultural heritage, and advance
opportunities for future generations; and
WHEREAS, the licensed practice of landscape architecture is a critical safeguard for
public health, safety, and welfare, and the profession ensures that outdoor environments
ranging from therapeutic gardens and playgrounds to complex stormwater and transportation
systems are designed with technical rigor and ethical responsibility; and
WHEREAS, landscape architects are uniquely qualified to address flooding and
urban heat through resilient and sustainable green infrastructure design strategies that restore
ecosystems, mitigate environmental hazards, and reduce the long-term financial burden of
disaster recovery on state and local governments; and

WHEREAS, the economy of Louisiana is strengthened by the work of two hundred
forty licensed landscape architects and the accredited program at Louisiana State University;
their work fosters economic development, tourism, and environmental protection; and
WHEREAS, landscape architecture is a regulated profession in all fifty states and in
the District of Columbia, and the Council of Landscape Architectural Registration Board
ensures the highest standards of professional competence through rigorous STEM education,
experience, and examination requirements.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby designate April as Landscape Architecture Month and
April first as Professional Landscape Architecture Day in Louisiana and does hereby
encourage all citizens to celebrate landscape architecture and recognize the essential role that
landscape architects play in shaping a resilient and enduring American landscape.
