BY REPRESENTATIVES OWEN, AMEDEE, BILLINGS, BUTLER, EGAN, FIRMENT,

A RESOLUTION
To urge and request the government of the United Kingdom to continue its commitment to
the foundational principles of individual liberties as enshrined in the Magna Carta
and other historic British documents and to encourage the preservation of its
heritage.
WHEREAS, the United Kingdom stands as a bedrock of Western civilization, having
pioneered enduring principles of liberty, justice, and democratic governance that have
inspired nations around the world, including the United States of America and the State of
Louisiana; and
WHEREAS, the Magna Carta of 1215, along with documents such as the English Bill
of Rights of 1689 and the Petition of Right of 1628, established fundamental protections for
individual freedoms, including the right to free speech, due process, and resistance against
arbitrary authority, forming the cornerstone of modern constitutionalism; and
WHEREAS, the British people have a legacy of resilience and moral courage and a
heritage of confronting and defeating tyrants who sought to suppress speech and curtail
liberties, from the defiance of King John's overreach to the valor displayed in the face of
totalitarian regimes during the World Wars; and
WHEREAS, the United Kingdom achieved historic milestones in advancing human
dignity, including the abolition of slavery through the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833, which
preceded similar actions in the United States and served as a moral exemplar for global
emancipation efforts; and
WHEREAS, the United States and the State of Louisiana have deep cultural,
economic, and historical ties to the United Kingdom and share a profound affinity for British
heritage, with Louisiana's legal traditions drawing upon common law principles inherited
from British jurisprudence, and countless Louisianans tracing their ancestry to British roots;
