HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 90

A RESOLUTION
To express the condolences of the House of Representatives upon the death of Minnesota
House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman.
WHEREAS, it is with immense sadness and profound regret that the House of
Representatives of the Legislature of Louisiana has learned of the tragic passing of
Minnesota House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman; and
WHEREAS, Melissa Hortman was born on May 27, 1970, in Fridley, Minnesota, and
graduated from Blaine High School in 1988; and
WHEREAS, Speaker Emerita Hortman attended Boston University, where she
majored in philosophy and political science and graduated in 1991; she earned a juris doctor
degree from the University of Minnesota Law School and completed a master of public
administration degree at the Harvard Kennedy School; and
WHEREAS, Speaker Emerita Hortman served in several governmental roles prior
to joining the Minnesota Legislature; she was a legislative staffer for U.S. Senators Al Gore
and John Kerry; served as a law clerk to Judge John Sommerville in Hennepin County,
Minnesota; served on the City Human Relations Commission in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota;
and served as an assistant county attorney in Hennepin County; and
WHEREAS, Speaker Emerita Hortman was elected to the Minnesota House of
Representatives in 2004 and served Anoka and Hennepin Counties; as a legislator, she was
active in the areas of transportation, K-12 education funding, higher education, energy, and
the environment; and
WHEREAS, Melissa Hortman served as speaker of the Minnesota House of
Representatives from 2019 until January 2025; and
WHEREAS, Speaker Emerita Hortman was married to the late Mark Hortman, and
she was the mother of two children: Colin and Sophie; and

WHEREAS, Melissa Hortman was a consummate public servant and beloved
member of her community; she will be deeply missed, but the legacy of her service to and
compassion for the citizens of Minnesota shall live on in perpetuity.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby express heartfelt condolences on the death of
Minnesota House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman; does hereby extend enduring
appreciation for her dedicated service to the state of Minnesota; and does hereby extend
sincere wishes that her family, friends, former colleagues, and loved ones find comfort in
their shared memories of her beautiful life.
