A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
To commemorate the celebration of St. Patrick's Day and recognize the cultural and historic
links between Ireland and Louisiana and the establishment of the American Irish
State Legislators Caucus.
WHEREAS, on March 17, during the annual celebration of the Feast of Saint Patrick,
the Patron Saint of Ireland, Irish Americans join with men, women, and children of all ethnic
origins who, for one day, become Irish and celebrate Saint Patrick and love for Ireland; and
WHEREAS, on Saint Patrick's Day, people throughout the state of Louisiana and
around the world wear green and live for a day in the spirit of Saint Patrick, Saint Brigid, and
Saint Colmcille; and
WHEREAS, Irish immigrants in the United States helped form the cultural
foundation of the nation, and those of Irish lineage today proudly sing their support for
Ireland; and
WHEREAS, there has always been a strong cultural connection between Ireland and
Louisiana, especially in New Orleans where the first St. Patrick's Day celebration was held
in 1806; and
WHEREAS, between 1832 and 1838, an important new shipping channel, the New
Basin Canal in New Orleans, was built with a workforce consisting almost entirely of Irish
immigrants, which led to the building of several cohesive Irish communities in the city such
as the Irish Channel Historic District and Irish Bayou; and
WHEREAS, the songs of Ireland are the tragic songs of love, joyous songs of battle,
nostalgic reveries of the sorrows, and the glories that are the Emerald Isle, and lamentations
of life's myriad travails, and the odes of joy and the life eternal; and
WHEREAS, with leadership in all 50 states, the American Irish State Legislators
Caucus was established with the aim of fostering and strengthening the longstanding
relationship that exists between the United States of America and Ireland to the mutual
benefit of both countries.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
commemorate the celebration of St. Patrick's Day and recognizes the cultural and historic
links between Ireland and Louisiana and the establishment of the American Irish State
Legislators Caucus.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
National Co-chairs of the American Irish State Legislators Caucus: Senator Beth Mizell of
Louisiana; Senator Mark Daly, Chair of the Senate of Ireland; Representative Brian Patrick
Kennedy of Rhode Island; Speaker Robin Vos of Wisconsin; Assemblywoman Carol
Murphy of New Jersey; Senator Shannon O'Brien of Montana; Representative Killian
Timoney of Kentucky; Representative Fran Hurley of Illinois; Representative James
Gallagher of California; Senator Ogden Driskill of Wyoming; Senator Wayne Harper of
