A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
To commend Mike McConathy on being inducted into the 2026 class of the Louisiana
Sports Hall of Fame.
WHEREAS, each year the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in Natchitoches, Louisiana
collaborates with the Louisiana Sports Writers Association in selecting a limited number of
sports figures who embody the character, skill, talent, and accomplishment worthy of being
named to the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS, the 2026 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Induction Class includes Mike
McConathy; and
WHEREAS, Mike McConathy, a native of Bossier City, has devoted more than four
decades of his life to the sport of basketball as a player, coach, mentor, and educator, earning
statewide and national respect for his leadership and dedication to student-athletes; and
WHEREAS, McConathy first distinguished himself as a standout athlete at Airline
High School, where he earned recognition as a prep All-American guard before continuing
his collegiate career at Louisiana Tech University; and
WHEREAS, while playing for the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs men's basketball team
from 1973 through 1977, he averaged 20.7 points per game and scored 2,033 career points,
earning Southland Conference Player of the Year honors as a junior and helping lead his
team to a conference championship; and
WHEREAS, his outstanding collegiate performance led to his selection in the 1977
NBA Draft by the Chicago Bulls, after which he briefly played professional basketball in
Europe before dedicating himself to coaching; and
WHEREAS, McConathy began his coaching career at Airline High School before
launching the men's basketball program at Bossier Parish Community College, where he
spent sixteen seasons building the Cavaliers into one of the most successful programs in the
National Junior College Athletic Association, producing numerous winning seasons and
establishing a strong foundation for the program; and

WHEREAS, in 1999, he accepted the position of head coach at Northwestern State
University, taking over the Northwestern State Demons men's basketball program and
transforming it into a competitive force in the Southland Conference; and
WHEREAS, during his twenty-three seasons at Northwestern State, McConathy
compiled 330 victories and guided the Demons to multiple championship game appearances
in the Southland Conference tournament, including four consecutive appearances from 2005
through 2008; and
WHEREAS, his teams reached postseason play on several occasions, including
appearances in the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament in 2001, 2006, and 2013,
highlighted by a memorable 2006 first-round victory over the Iowa Hawkeyes men's
basketball, as well as an appearance in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament in 2014; and
WHEREAS, over the course of his remarkable forty-three year coaching career,
McConathy accumulated a record 682 victories, 330 at Northwestern State and 352 at
Bossier Parish Community College, making him the winningest college basketball coach in
Louisiana history among both men's and women's programs; and
WHEREAS, his commitment to academic success was equally impressive, as ninety
percent of his players graduated during his tenure, reflecting his dedication to developing
student-athletes both on and off the court; and
WHEREAS, McConathy's influence has extended beyond the court through his
mentorship of numerous coaches and through his service as a faculty member at
Northwestern State University; and
WHEREAS, in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to the university and
to the sport of basketball, the playing court at Prather Coliseum was officially named in his
honor on February 15, 2025; and
WHEREAS, he has been inducted into the Louisiana Tech Athletic Hall of Fame, the
Northwestern State Athletic Hall of Fame, the Ark-La-Tex Museum of Champions, and the
Northwestern State Hall of Distinguished Educators; and
WHEREAS, through his leadership, perseverance, and lifelong commitment to
excellence, Mike McConathy has left an indelible mark on collegiate athletics in Louisiana.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby

Hall of Fame.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Mike
McConathy.
