ROADS/HIGHWAYS. Urges DOTD to evaluate all school zones on state highways.
1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
2 To urge and request the Department of Transportation and Development to evaluate
3 impediments to safety measures and speed limits in school zones on state highways.
4 WHEREAS, the safety of schoolchildren, crossing guards, parents, and school
5 personnel traveling through school zones is a matter of vital public concern; and
6 WHEREAS, following the tragic death of beloved crossing guard Katy Wells near
7 Gray's Creek Elementary School in Livingston Parish, residents and elected officials have
8 expressed concerns regarding speeding and dangerous driving conditions in that area; and
9 WHEREAS, residents have reported repeated instances of motorists traveling at
10 unsafe speeds through the school zone and near pedestrians, including children, walking to
11 and from school; and
12 WHEREAS, our students and the heroes who protect them every day deserve every
13 possible safeguard to prevent future tragedies and to remain safe in school zones.
14 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
15 urge and request the Department of Transportation and Development to evaluate
16 impediments to implementing enhanced safety measures and reduced speed limits in school
17 zones located on state highways.
18 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
