BY SENATOR HODGES AND REPRESENTATIVE CHASSION
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
To urge and request the Department of Transportation and Development to evaluate
impediments to safety measures and speed limits in school zones on state highways.
WHEREAS, the safety of schoolchildren, crossing guards, parents, and school
personnel traveling through school zones is a matter of vital public concern; and
WHEREAS, following the tragic death of beloved crossing guard Katy Wells near
Gray's Creek Elementary School in Livingston Parish, residents and elected officials have
expressed concerns regarding speeding and dangerous driving conditions in that area; and
WHEREAS, residents have reported repeated instances of motorists traveling at
unsafe speeds through the school zone and near pedestrians, including children, walking to
and from school; and
WHEREAS, our students and the heroes who protect them every day deserve every
possible safeguard to prevent future tragedies and to remain safe in school zones.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
urge and request the Department of Transportation and Development to evaluate
impediments to implementing enhanced safety measures and reduced speed limits in school
zones located on state highways.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
secretary of the Department of Transportation and Development.
