COMMENDATIONS. Commends Grambling State University upon the celebration of the
one hundred twenty-fifth anniversary of its founding and recognizes its enduring
contributions to higher education, leadership, and public service in the state of Louisiana and
beyond.
1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
2 To commend Grambling State University upon the celebration of the one hundred twenty-
3 fifth anniversary of its founding and to recognize its enduring contributions to higher
4 education, leadership, and public service in the state of Louisiana and beyond.
5 WHEREAS, Grambling State University opened on November 1, 1901, as the
6 Colored Industrial and Agricultural School; and
7 WHEREAS, the institution was founded through the efforts of the North Louisiana
8 Colored Agriculture Relief Association, organized in 1896 by African American farmers
9 seeking to establish educational opportunities for African Americans in their region of
10 Louisiana; and
11 WHEREAS, in response to the association's request for assistance, Booker T.
12 Washington sent Charles P. Adams to help organize the school, and Adams became its
13 founding president; and
14 WHEREAS, in 1905, the institution moved to its present location in Grambling,
15 Louisiana, where it has continued for generations to educate students and serve communities
16 throughout the state of Louisiana, the nation, and the world; and
17 WHEREAS, over the course of its distinguished history, the institution evolved in
18 name and mission and was designated Grambling State University in 1974, while remaining

1 steadfast in its commitment to academic excellence, opportunity, and service; and
2 WHEREAS, Grambling State University has stood as a proud and enduring symbol
3 of access, achievement, and perseverance and has made an immeasurable impact through the
4 education of generations of students and the preparation of leaders, in countless professions
5 and fields of service, for one hundred twenty-five years; and
6 WHEREAS, the university continues to be guided by its well-known motto, "Where
7 Everybody is Somebody," a guiding principle that reflects its longstanding commitment to
8 human dignity, educational opportunity, and the development of every student; and
9 WHEREAS, the celebration of the Grambling State University's one hundred twenty-
10 fifth anniversary is a fitting occasion on which to recognize its historic legacy and its
11 continuing importance to the people of Louisiana.
12 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
13 commend Grambling State University upon the celebration of the one hundred twenty-fifth
14 anniversary of its founding and does hereby recognize the university for its extraordinary
15 and lasting contributions to higher education, leadership, and public service.
16 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby extend
17 its sincere best wishes to the students, faculty, staff, alumni, administration, and supporters
18 of Grambling State University upon the commemoration of this historic milestone and the
19 institution's proud and enduring legacy of excellence.
20 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
21 Grambling State University.
