SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 14
BY SENATOR MIZELL
A RESOLUTION
To commend and recognize the history of Irish Americans and the 250th anniversary of their
signing of the Declaration of Independence.
WHEREAS, in 2026, the United States marks two hundred fifty years of
independence; and
WHEREAS, from the very beginning of America's independence, Irish Americans
demonstrated a commitment of faith, culture, and charity while serving as soldiers in
Washington's army, leaders in politics, builders of cities, and servants of communities, never
forgetting their heritage while helping to build a stronger nation; and
WHEREAS, for generations, Irish immigrants and their descendants helped shape
America, by digging canals and building railroads, raising churches and schools, and filling
the ranks of the military, police, and fire services; and
WHEREAS, the Irish Independence Movement was a prolonged struggle for
self-rule, which culminated in the 1919-1921 Irish War of Independence, and the 1922
guerrilla conflict between the Irish Republican Army and British forces that led to the
creation of the Irish Free State, which consisted of twenty-six counties, while Northern
Ireland remained in the United Kingdom sparking the divisive 1922-1923 Irish Civil War
and shaping modern Irish politics; and
WHEREAS, key drivers of the movement included nationalism, republicanism, the
legacy of the 1916 Easter Rising, and armed resistance groups like the Irish Republican
Brotherhood (IRB); and
WHEREAS, Irish American groups are leading initiatives like the "Revolutionary
Irish Trail" and "Irish America 250" to highlight the vital, often unsung, roles of Irish
immigrants and their descendants in the American Revolution and building of the nation;
and
WHEREAS, these initiatives showcase the contributions of soldiers, leaders, and
community builders through events, trails, and educational projects to honor their heritage
and impact on democracy; and
