SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 47

A RESOLUTION
To designate Wednesday, April 8, 2026, as Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated Day
at the Louisiana State Capitol.
WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded on January 13, 1913, by
twenty-two collegiate women at Howard University who sought to use their collective
strength to promote academic excellence, provide scholarships and support to those in need,
educate and stimulate participation in the establishment of positive public policy, and
address issues affecting their communities; and
WHEREAS, since its founding, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority has been committed to
civic engagement and public service, including historic efforts to promote voter education,
civil rights, and participation in the democratic process while encouraging leadership and
advocacy in communities across the nation; and
WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was incorporated in 1930 and is a private,
nonprofit organization that provides assistance and support through established programs
in local communities and throughout the world; and
WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated is the largest African
American Greek-letter sorority, a sisterhood of more than three hundred fifty thousand
predominantly African American, college-educated women, comprised of more than one
thousand fifty chapters worldwide; and
WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated maintains a strong presence
throughout the state of Louisiana, with numerous alumnae and collegiate chapters actively
serving their communities through programs focused on education, health, economic
empowerment, and civic engagement; and
WHEREAS, the members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated stand on the
shoulders of giants, including former state representatives Renee Gill Pratt, Rosalind
Peychaud, Jalila Jefferson Bullock, and the late Pinkie Carolyn Wilkerson, and former state
senators, Diana E. Bajoie, Karen Carter Peterson, and Cheryl Gray Evans, whose leadership
has left an enduring imprint on the history of this state; and

WHEREAS, membership in this highly regarded, service-based sorority also includes
Louisiana State Senate Secretary Yolanda J. Dixon; and
WHEREAS, to uplift, encourage, and develop the global community, Delta Sigma
Theta Sorority, Incorporated focuses its efforts on the Five-Point Programmatic Thrust of
Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and
Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement; and
WHEREAS, the organizational structure and governance of Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority, Incorporated is vested in the Grand Chapter, which meets at a biennial national
convention, and regional conferences held in the organization's seven geographic regions
during nonconvention years; and
WHEREAS, the success of the public service programs of Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority, Incorporated exemplifies the organization's commitment to community service and
academic achievement, as well as its quest for excellence in all endeavors.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
does hereby designate Wednesday, April 8, 2026, as Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,
Incorporated Day at the Louisiana State Capitol; commends and recognizes the women of
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated for their exceptional achievements and manifold
contributions; and extends enduring appreciation to the organization and its members for the
tremendous pride and honor they bring to their local communities, the state of Louisiana, and
the United States of America.
