SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 68

A RESOLUTION
To recognize Friday, May 1, 2026, as AmeriCorps Seniors Southern University at
Shreveport (SUSLA) Foster Grandparent Volunteer Day.
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend the AmeriCorps Seniors Foster
Grandparent Volunteer Program for the forty-six years of exceptional service it has provided
in Caddo and Bossier parishes; and
WHEREAS, service in AmeriCorps promotes bridge-building, collaboration, and
leadership skills to bring the people of the United States together from different
backgrounds, generations, and geographic locations; and
WHEREAS, for more than five decades, millions of volunteers in the AmeriCorps
Seniors Foster Grandparent Program have played an important role in strengthening
communities by sharing their experience, knowledge, and accomplishments with the
individuals they serve; and
WHEREAS, this nationwide program offers seniors, fifty-five years of age or older,
the opportunity to serve as one-on-one mentors, tutors, and caregivers to economically
disadvantaged youth; and
WHEREAS, the program aims to improve behavioral and educational outcomes for
students with special and exceptional needs, helps children who suffer from abuse or neglect,
and provides support to children of veterans or those with a deployed family member; and
WHEREAS, AmeriCorps is serving over two hundred eighty thousand special needs
children through a network of various organizations, helping to guide students to higher
academic achievement; and
WHEREAS, the AmeriCorps Seniors SUSLA Foster Grandparent Volunteer Program
matches the willingness and capacity of Caddo/Bossier FGP's volunteers to devote their
time, experience, and compassion with the needs of children to learn and prepare for the life
ahead of them; and

WHEREAS, this program continues to fulfill its mission of providing guidance and
support to disadvantaged children, while enriching the lives of the senior volunteers resulting
in better health and longevity having served their community; and
WHEREAS, AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers who serve with the Foster Grandparent
Program provide the kind of comfort and love that sets a child on a path to a successful
future.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
does hereby commend the AmeriCorps Seniors Southern University at Shreveport
Caddo/Bossier Foster Grandparent Volunteer Program for forty-six years of exceptional
service to children and does hereby extend best wishes for its continued success in the future.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
AmeriCorps Seniors of SUSLA Caddo/Bossier Foster Grandparent Volunteer Program.
