A RESOLUTION
To express the sincere and heartfelt condolences of the Senate of the Legislature of
Louisiana upon the passing of George Douglas Brandon, DVM.
WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow to receive news of the death
of George Douglas Brandon, DVM, on August 24, 2025, at the age of eighty-one; and
WHEREAS, George Douglas Brandon, affectionately known as "Dr. Doug", was
raised on a small farm in Sabine Parish, where his love for animal health first took root and
led him to pursue a career in veterinary medicine, inspired by both a need and a deep desire
to serve his community; and
WHEREAS, after graduating as valedictorian from Zwolle High School, he earned
a bachelor's degree in animal science from Louisiana State University, and later in 1971, a
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree with honors from Auburn University; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Doug took immense pride in his military service where he proudly
served as a captain in the United States Army Veterinary Corps, with duty stations including
Fort Sam Houston, NAS Corpus Christi, and Fort Polk, Louisiana, where he provided
veterinary services for many families and developed lifelong friendships in the military
community; and
WHEREAS, in 1975, while stationed at Fort Polk, he met and eventually married his
future wife, Paula Teresa Johnson; and
WHEREAS, in 1977, he founded Brandon Veterinary Clinic in Leesville, Louisiana,
a practice he worked tirelessly along with his wife for over forty-eight years, which became
known throughout the region for its exceptional care, compassion, and service to both small
and large animals; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Doug's devotion to Vernon Parish extended beyond his clinic, as
he faithfully served in numerous leadership roles, including chairman of the Vernon Bank,
Vernon Parish District 1 School Board Member, past president of the Greater Vernon
Chamber of Commerce, chairman of the Military Affairs Committee, Fort Polk Progress
director, and chairman of the Sabine River Compact; and

WHEREAS, he was a lifelong member of multiple veterinary and professional
organizations including the American Veterinary Medical Association, Louisiana Veterinary
Medical Association, Central Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association, and the Auburn
Alumni Association; and
WHEREAS, in 2012, he was recognized with the Louisiana Veterinary Medical
Association's Everett D. Besch Distinguished Service Award for his outstanding
contributions to the field of veterinary medicine; and
WHEREAS, he leaves behind a legacy of compassion and strength that will live on
through his family, the animals he cared for, the people he inspired, and the community he
helped shape over his decades of service; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Nathaniel and Joyce
Brandon, sister, Frances Brandon Buvens, and brother-in-law, Rick Basham; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Doug is survived by his wife of forty-two years Paula Brandon,
three sons: Dr. Brian Brandon (Diana), Luke Brandon (Jana), and Dr. Jesse Brandon
(Amanda); six grandchildren: Addison Brandon, Matthew Brandon, Leanna Brandon, Lucas
Brandon, Bryce Brandon, and Brody Brandon, sister, Carolyn Brandon Basham, and many
other cherished family and friends.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
does hereby express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the passing of George Douglas
Brandon, DVM.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Paula
Teresa Brandon.
