BY SENATORS MIGUEZ AND ALLAIN
A RESOLUTION
To express sincere and heartfelt condolences on the passing of Lionel Howard Sutton II.
WHEREAS, it is with profound sorrow that the Senate of the Legislature of
Louisiana has learned of the passing of Lionel Sutton II, who departed this life peacefully
at his home on Thursday, April 9, 2026, at the age of eighty-eight; and
WHEREAS, Lionel Howard Sutton II was born on May 23, 1937, in New Orleans,
Louisiana, to Loris Lusk Sutton and Lionel Howard Sutton, and throughout his life he
exemplified the values of dedication, integrity, and generosity; and
WHEREAS, a proud graduate of Jeanerette High School, he continued his education
at Tulane University, where he distinguished himself as a member of the Beta Theta Pi
Fraternity, forming lifelong friendships and cultivating a spirit of brotherhood and
leadership; and
WHEREAS, Lionel Sutton was a longstanding businessman whose professional
endeavors were marked by diligence and success, and whose philanthropic contributions
reflected his unwavering commitment to improving the lives of others; and
WHEREAS, he was an active and valued member of numerous civic and social
organizations, including the Optimist Club of New Iberia, the Royal Society of Gourmets
of Jeanerette, and the Veterans Spade Card Playing Group, through which he fostered
fellowship, goodwill, and community engagement; and
WHEREAS, Lionel Sutton was known for his vibrant personality, his love of life,
and his ability to bring joy to those around him, whether spending time on the water at his
camp in Stephensville, Louisiana, gathering with family and friends in Pensacola Beach,
Florida, or sharing laughter and stories around the card table; and
WHEREAS, he will be remembered as a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Mary
Catherine Sutton, and cherished sister, Loris Sutton Toranto, who is left to treasure his
memory, along with his children, stepchildren, grandchildren, step-grandchildren,
great-grandchild, step-great-grandchild, and extended family; and

WHEREAS, his passing leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew him, but his
memory will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to share in his life.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
does hereby express sincere and heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Lionel
Howard Sutton II and does hereby recognize and honor his remarkable life, his many
contributions, and his lasting legacy.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Mary
Catherine Sutton.
