BY SENATOR FOIL
A RESOLUTION
To express the sincere condolences of the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana upon the
passing of Barbara Vastine Hughes, and to recognize her lifetime of service, faith,
and dedication to her family and community.
WHEREAS, the Senate of Louisiana joins with the family and friends of Barbara
Vastine Hughes in mourning her passing on January 11, 2026, and in recognizing a life
marked by kindness, integrity, and a deep personal commitment to serving others; and
WHEREAS, born on August 31, 1935, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to Marvin and
Ethel Vastine, Barbara was raised with values that guided her lifelong dedication to family,
faith, and service; and
WHEREAS, she attended University High School and later Louisiana State
University, where she was an active campus leader, a member of Chi Omega, and was
honored as Freshman of the Year; and
WHEREAS, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Business from Louisiana State
University and applied her talents in budget and finance roles across a variety of industries,
including work with a historic sugar cane farm and the Louisiana State University
Agriculture Center; and
WHEREAS, Barbara met her husband, William J. Hughes Jr., on a blind date, and
their marriage in 1980 marked the beginning of a loving and enduring partnership; and
WHEREAS, her love of people, events, and history, together with her husband's love
of aviation, shaped a life filled with shared adventures and extensive travel fostering lasting
friendships both at home and abroad; and
WHEREAS, Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, William J. Hughes Jr.;
her parents, Marvin and Ethel Vastine; and her sister, Sandra Dennis and her husband, Jack;

WHEREAS, she is survived by her brother, Boone Vastine and his wife, Carolyn;
her daughter, Cheryl Jones and her husband, Rowley, and their children, Shelby Neuman and
her husband, Nick, and Grayson Jones; her son, Richard Wood and his wife, Dr. Rebecca
Adcock; her stepdaughter, Nancy Readinger and her children, Alexa Alexander and Andrew
Readinger; her stepson, Jeff Hughes and his wife, Tammy, and his children, Jessica Stewart
and her husband, Chad, and Campbell Hughes and his wife, Amy Paige; as well as five
great-granddaughters, a future great-grandson, and numerous nieces and nephews; and
WHEREAS, Barbara leaves behind a legacy of service and will be remembered for
her warmth, wit, and sincere interest in others, qualities that enriched the lives of all who
knew her.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
does hereby express its sincere condolences upon the passing of Barbara Vastine Hughes.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
family of Barbara Vastine Hughes.
