1Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows:
2Sec. 1. 20-A MRSA §14 is enacted to read:
3§14. Student identification
4 Notwithstanding Title 5, chapter 337, personnel of a public school and public charter
5 school authorized under chapter 112 shall refer to a minor student by the name and gender
6 listed on the student's official record of birth submitted to the school at the time of
7 enrollment pursuant to section 6002 unless the minor student's parent provides written
8 permission stating otherwise or documentation of a legal change of name or gender is
9 provided to the school.
10SUMMARY
11 This bill provides that public school and public charter school personnel must refer to
12 a minor student by the name and gender listed on the student's official record of birth
13 submitted to the school at the time of enrollment unless the minor student's parent or
14 guardian provides written permission stating otherwise or documentation of a legal change
15 of name or gender is provided to the school.
