1Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows:
2Sec. 1. 24-A MRSA §2916-D is enacted to read:
3§2916-D. Automobile insurance cancellation, nonrenewal and certain changes
4because of marital status prohibited
5 An insurance company authorized to transact business in this State may not cancel or
6 refuse to renew, reduce liability limits for or charge a higher premium for a policy for the
7 sole reason that a person to whom the policy has been issued has experienced a change in
8 marital status due to the death of the person's spouse.
9SUMMARY
10 This bill prohibits an insurance company from refusing to issue, cancelling, reducing
11 liability limits for or charging a higher premium for a policy for the sole reason that a person
12 to whom the policy has been issued has experienced a change in marital status due to the
13 death of the person's spouse.
