1Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows:
2Sec. 1. 14 MRSA §159-A, sub-§1, ¶B, as amended by PL 2015, c. 20, §1, is further
3 amended to read:
4 B. "Recreational or harvesting activities" means recreational activities conducted out-
5 of-doors, including, but not limited to, hunting, fishing, trapping, sport shooting,
6 camping, environmental education and research, hiking, rock climbing, ice climbing,
7 bouldering, rappelling, recreational caving, sight-seeing, operating snow-traveling and
8 all-terrain vehicles, skiing, hang-gliding, noncommercial aviation activities, dog
9 sledding, equine activities, boating, sailing, canoeing, rafting, biking, picnicking,
10 swimming or activities involving the harvesting or gathering of forest, field or marine
11 products. It includes entry of, volunteer maintenance and improvement of, use of and
12 passage over premises in order to pursue these activities. "Recreational or harvesting
13 activities" does not include commercial agricultural or timber harvesting.
14Sec. 2. 14 MRSA §159-A, sub-§1, ¶D is enacted to read:
15 D. "Sport shooting" means engaging in archery, skeet and trap shooting or other
16 similar shooting sports and the shooting of rifles, shotguns and pistols.
17SUMMARY
18 This bill specifies that the owner, lessee, manager, holder of an easement or occupant
19 of land who gives permission to another to engage in sport shooting on that owner's, lessee's
20 manager's, holder's or occupant's land is entitled to limited liability for injury to that other
21 person. Sport shooting is defined as engaging in archery, skeet and trap shooting or other
22 similar shooting sports and the shooting of rifles, shotguns and pistols.
