1Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows:
2Sec. 1. 23 MRSA §1984 is enacted to read:
3§1984. Authorized emergency vehicles; exemption from tolls
41. Definitions. As used in this section, unless the context otherwise indicates, the
5 following terms have the following meanings.
6 A. "Authorized emergency vehicle" has the same meaning as in Title 29-A, section
7 2054, subsection 1, paragraph B.
8 B. "Responding to an emergency" means responding to, working at the scene of or
9 returning from a fire, emergency medical services or law enforcement call; a hazardous
10 or toxic materials spill and cleanup; or any other situation to which a fire department,
11 emergency medical services provider or law enforcement officer has been dispatched.
122. Authorized emergency vehicles; responding to an emergency. The authority may
13 not charge or collect tolls on an authorized emergency vehicle that is responding to an
14 emergency.
153. Authorized emergency vehicles; nonemergency situation. The authority may not
16 charge or collect tolls on an authorized emergency vehicle that is using the turnpike for:
17 A. Performing a nonemergency medical transport; or
18 B. Traveling to a repair facility that specializes in maintenance and repair for
19 authorized emergency vehicles.
20SUMMARY
21 This bill prohibits the Maine Turnpike Authority from charging or collecting tolls on
22 an authorized emergency vehicle that is using the turnpike to respond to an emergency, for
23 nonemergency medical transport or to travel to a repair facility that specializes in
24 maintenance and repair for authorized emergency vehicles. The bill defines "authorized
25 emergency vehicle" and "responding to an emergency."
