Resolve, to Honor Margaret Chase Smith and Joshua Chamberlain in the
National Statuary Hall Collection
Sec. 1. Replacement of statues in National Statuary Hall with statues of
Margaret Chase Smith and Joshua Chamberlain. Resolved: That, by October 1,
2025, the Maine Arts Commission, the Maine State Museum Commission and the Maine
Historic Preservation Commission, as established by the Maine Revised Statutes, Title 5,
section 12004-G, subsections 7-B, 7-C and 7-D, respectively, in accordance with 2 United
States Code, Section 2132, shall request that the Joint Committee of Congress on the
Library approve the replacement of the statue of Hannibal Hamlin and the statue of William
King that are currently located in the National Statuary Hall Collection with a statue of
Margaret Chase Smith and a statue of Joshua Chamberlain. Within one year of the approval
of the replacement of the statues, the commissions shall begin to replace the statues of
Hannibal Hamlin and William King with statues of Margaret Chase Smith and Joshua
Chamberlain that meet all applicable federal requirements. The commissions shall relocate
the statues of Hannibal Hamlin and William King to the State and place them within public
view within the State House, if feasible, or on the grounds of the State House. The
commissions shall accept private gifts, grants and donations from individuals and
organizations to fund the costs of replacing the statues of Hannibal Hamlin and William
King in the National Statuary Hall Collection with the statues of Margaret Chase Smith and
Joshua Chamberlain and to transport and display those statues within public view within
the State House or, if feasible, on the grounds of the State House. The commissions are
authorized to contract with one or more entities to complete their duties under this section.
Sec. 2. Appropriations and allocations. Resolved: That the following
appropriations and allocations are made.

event that money is received from private or public sources.
