1Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows:
2Sec. 1. University of Maine System and University of Maine School of Law
3to establish night school law program in Orono. By the beginning of the 2028-2029
4 academic year, the University of Maine System in collaboration with the University of
5 Maine School of Law shall establish at the University of Maine at Orono a juris doctor
6 program that allows a student enrolled in the program to fulfill the degree requirements for
7 a juris doctor primarily by attending classes at night through online course work with
8 periodic in-person instruction. By November 4, 2026, the University of Maine System
9 shall submit a report related to the establishment of the night school law program to the
10 Joint Standing Committee on Education and Cultural Affairs.
11SUMMARY
12 This bill requires the University of Maine System in collaboration with the University
13 of Maine School of Law to establish at the University of Maine at Orono a juris doctor
14 program that allows a student enrolled in the program to fulfill the degree requirements for
15 a juris doctor primarily by attending classes at night through online course work with
16 periodic in-person instruction. By November 4, 2026, the University of Maine System
17 must submit a report related to the establishment of the program to the Joint Standing
18 Committee on Education and Cultural Affairs.
