An Act to Dissolve the Great Salt Bay Community School District
Emergency preamble. Whereas, acts and resolves of the Legislature do not
become effective until 90 days after adjournment unless enacted as emergencies; and
Whereas, the towns of Bremen, Damariscotta and Newcastle are members of the
Great Salt Bay Community School District that voted to approve a reorganization plan to
form Regional School Unit No. 48, effective July 1, 2025; and
Whereas, the method for voters to dissolve a community school district under the
Maine Revised Statutes, Title 20-A, section 1751 was repealed in 2007; and
Whereas, the Great Salt Bay Community School District has no connection to the
reorganized Regional School Unit No. 48 and no longer serves a purpose but has not been
formally dissolved; and
Whereas, in the judgment of the Legislature, these facts create an emergency within
the meaning of the Constitution of Maine and require the following legislation as
immediately necessary for the preservation of the public peace, health and safety; now,
therefore,
Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows:
Sec. 1. Great Salt Bay Community School District dissolved.
Notwithstanding any provision of law to the contrary, the Great Salt Bay Community
School District is dissolved.
Emergency clause. In view of the emergency cited in the preamble, this legislation
takes effect when approved.
