Maryland School Pedestrian Awareness Day; and generally relating to Ruby Bridges 8

YEAR AS “RUBY BRIDGES WALK TO SCHOOL DAY” TO COMMEMORATE RUBY 20

BRIDGES, WHO, ON NOVEMBER 14, 1960, BECAME THE FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN 1
STUDENT TO INTEGRATE AN ALL–WHITE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN NEW ORLEANS, 2
LOUISIANA. 3
(B) (1) THE DEPARTMENT SHALL MAKE RESOURCE MATERIALS 4
PUBLICLY AVAILABLE TO ASSIST LOCAL SCHOOL SYSTEMS IN PLANNING A PROGRAM 5
OF EDUCATION FOR RUBY BRIDGES WALK TO SCHOOL DAY. 6
(2) THE RESOURCE MATERIALS PROVIDED BY THE DEPARTMENT IN 7
ACCORDANCE WITH PARAGRAPH (1) OF THIS SUBSECTION: 8
(I) MAY INCLUDE INSTRUCTI ONAL MATERIALS , INCLUDING 9
AGE–APPROPRIATE LESSON PLANS, DISCUSSION GUIDES, HISTORICAL DOCUMENTS, 10
AND MULTIMEDIA RESOURCES; AND 11
(II) SHALL INCLUDE RESOURC ES TO ASSIST TEACHER S TO 12
ENGAGE STUDENTS IN DISCUSSIONS ABOUT CIVIL RIGHTS AND SOCIAL JUSTICE. 13

(A) THE PURPOSE OF THIS S ECTION IS TO DESIGNA TE THE SECOND 15
WEDNESDAY IN OCTOBER EACH YEAR AS “MARYLAND SCHOOL PEDESTRIAN 16
AWARENESS DAY” TO ENCOURAGE LOCAL S CHOOL SYSTEMS, IN COLLABORATION 17
WITH THE COUNTY OR M UNICIPALITY, TO PROMOTE SAFE PEDESTRIAN ROUTES TO 18
AND FROM SCHOOLS. 19
(B) THE DEPARTMENT SHALL MAKE RESOURCE MATERIALS P UBLICLY 20
AVAILABLE TO ASSIST LOCAL SCHOOL SYSTEMS IN PLANNING MARYLAND SCHOOL 21
PEDESTRIAN AWARENESS DAY. 22
(C) THE RESOURCE MATERIALS PROVIDED BY THE DEPARTMENT IN 23
ACCORDANCE WITH SUBSECTION (B) OF THIS SECTION MAY INCLUDE: 24
(1) PEDESTRIAN SAFETY BEST PRACTICES; 25
(2) AGE–APPROPRIATE PEDESTRIAN SAFETY LESSON PLANS; 26
(3) MODEL WALK AUDIT TEMPLATES AND DISCUSSION GUIDES; 27
(4) AVAILABLE GRANT RESOURCES; AND 28
(5) ANY OTHER MATERIALS RELATED TO PEDESTRIAN AWARENESS. 29
