An Act establishing a special legislative commission to study small modular reactors

Jones, Jr., and others for an investigation and study by a special legislative commission (including members of the General Court) to study small modular reactors. Telecommunications, Utilities and Energy.

Bill H.3512

SECTION 1. There shall be established a commission to study and develop a report on the use of small modular reactors as a baseload power source. The commission’s study shall include, but not be limited to, evaluating the efficacy of coupling small modular reactors with other intermittent renewable energy sources to leverage resources and produce high efficiencies while increasing grid stability and security, and the use of non-light water coolants and its effect on safety and reactor management.

SECTION 2. The commission shall consist of: the chairs of the joint committee on telecommunications, utilities, and energy or their designees, who shall serve as co-chairs; 1 member appointed by the speaker of the house of representatives; 1 member appointed by the president of the senate;1 member appointed by the minority leader of the house of representatives; 1 member appointed by the minority leader of the senate; the secretary of energy and environmental affairs or their designee; the executive director of the department of energy resources or their designee; and the secretary of administration and finance or their designee.

SECTION 3. The commission shall submit its report, along with any recommendations, to the clerk’s office of the house of representatives and the senate no later than 1 year after the passage of this act.
