SUBSTITUTE FOR
HOUSE BILL NO. 5717
A bill to amend 1954 PA 116, entitled
"Michigan election law,"
by amending section 373 (MCL 168.373).
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:
Sec. 373. If neither the township clerk, nor any deputy 1
township clerk, shall be and any other election-accredited employee 2
of the township are not available to perform any necessary 3
functions in connection with registrations, nominations, or 4
elections during the usual or required times for performing such 5
those functions, the township board of that township shall appoint 6
some qualified person who is a registered elector of the township 7
enter into a contract with an individual who is accredited to 8
conduct elections, in accordance with section 33, and who is a 9

resident of this state to perform such those functions until such 1
time as the township clerk or a deputy resume their township clerk 2
resumes those duties, or until a new township clerk is appointed or 3
elected and that new township clerk, or the clerk's deputy township 4
clerk, is accredited to conduct elections. Any such person so 5
appointed shall have The contracted individual has all of the 6
powers and authority of a deputy township clerk appointed by the 7
township clerk pertaining to registrations, nominations, and 8
elections. Unless otherwise provided in the contract, the 9
contracted individual shall provide a report to the township board 10
at each regularly scheduled township board meeting that occurs 11
while the contract is in effect that summarizes the duties 12
performed by the contracted individual. 13
