HOUSE BILL NO. 5906

A bill to amend 2016 PA 407, entitled
"Skilled trades regulation act,"
by amending section 731 (MCL 339.5731), as amended by 2018 PA 151.
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:
Sec. 731. (1) Except as otherwise provided in section 737 or 1
section 10 of the Stille-DeRossett-Hale single state construction 2
code act, 1972 PA 230, MCL 125.1510, only an individual who is 3
licensed under this article shall install electrical wiring. In a 4
municipality where inspection service is provided, a person shall 5
obtain a permit from the board or municipality that has 6

jurisdiction. 1
(2) If electrical wiring is installed without compensation by 2
a person that is licensed under this article for or on behalf of a 3
charitable organization, the owner of the property on which the 4
work is performed may obtain the permit required under subsection 5
(1). However, the charitable organization exception under this 6
subsection applies only to the reconstruction, renovation, or 7
remodeling of 1- to 4-family dwellings. 8
(3) Except as otherwise provided in section 737, a person 9
shall not erect, install, alter, repair, service, or maintain fire 10
alarm system wiring, devices, appliances, or equipment in a 11
building or structure without a license. 12
(4) Except as otherwise provided in section 737, a person 13
shall not install, connect, repair, or maintain electric signs and 14
related wiring without a license. 15
(5) Notwithstanding any other provisions of this article and 16
after a proper application is submitted and the appropriate fees 17
paid, the board and department shall issue a license without 18
examination to an individual seeking sign specialty licensure if he 19
or she the individual is licensed, registered, or otherwise 20
regulated in another state and the board determines that the 21
standards in the other state meet or exceed the standards imposed 22
in this article. 23
Enacting section 1. This amendatory act does not take effect 24
unless House Bill No. 5905 (request no. H06047'26) of the 103rd 25
Legislature is enacted into law. 26
