HOUSE BILL NO. 6120
A bill to amend 2006 PA 110, entitled
"Michigan zoning enabling act,"
by amending section 201 (MCL 125.3201).
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:
Sec. 201. (1) A local unit of government may provide by zoning 1
ordinance for the regulation of land development and the 2
establishment of 1 or more districts within its zoning jurisdiction 3
which that regulate the use of land and structures to meet the 4
needs of the this state's citizens for food, fiber, energy, and 5

other natural resources, places of residence, recreation, industry, 1
trade, service, and other uses of land, to ensure that use of the 2
land is situated in appropriate locations and relationships, to 3
limit the inappropriate overcrowding of land and congestion of 4
population, transportation systems, and other public facilities, to 5
facilitate adequate and efficient provision for transportation 6
systems, sewage disposal, water, energy, education, recreation, and 7
other public service and facility requirements, and to promote 8
public health, safety, and welfare. 9
(2) Except as otherwise provided under this act, the 10
regulations shall must be uniform for each class of land or 11
buildings, dwellings, and structures within a district. 12
(3) A local unit of government may provide under the zoning 13
ordinance for the regulation of land development and the 14
establishment of districts which that apply only to land areas and 15
activities involved in a special program to achieve specific land 16
management objectives and avert or solve specific land use 17
problems, including the regulation of land development and the 18
establishment of districts in areas subject to damage from flooding 19
or beach erosion. 20
(4) A local unit of government may adopt land development 21
regulations under the zoning ordinance designating or limiting the 22
location, height, bulk, number of stories, uses, and size of 23
dwellings, buildings, and structures that may be erected or 24
altered, including tents and recreational vehicles. 25
(5) The authority of a local unit of government under this act 26
extends to land acquired by the University of Michigan on or after 27
January 1, 2027. 28
