must meet the following criteria: 1
(a) It must meet or exceed standards established by the state 2
board of education. 3
(b) Except as otherwise provided in this subdivision, the 4
public high school must make a good-faith effort to offer the 5
course in an in-person setting. If an in-person setting is not 6
feasible for purposes of meeting the requirement under this 7
subdivision, the public high school may offer the course through a 8
virtual or distance-based option. The requirement to make a good-9
faith effort to offer the course in an in-person setting does not 10
apply to a public high school that operates entirely virtually. A 11
public high school may meet the requirements of this subdivision by 12
offering the course in any facility operated by a school district, 13
intermediate school district, public school academy, career and 14
technical education center, or career and technical education 15
consortium. 16
(c) It must be listed as an option on the school's catalog of 17
courses, as confirmed by the district, intermediate school 18
district, or public school academy. 19
(3) As used in this section: 20
(a) "Computer science" means the study of computers and 21
algorithmic processes, including, but not limited to, their 22
principles, hardware and software designs, implementation, and 23
impact on society, and is a study that focuses on teaching students 24
how to create new technologies and not solely the use of 25
technology. 26
(b) "Public high school" means a public school that offers at 27
least 1 of grades 9 to 12. 28
