relating to public safety; requiring reporting on fires involving alternative energy

systems; requiring a report; proposing coding for new law in Minnesota Statutes,

chapter 299F.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

As used in this section, an "alternative energy system" includes

systems that collect energy from wind, solar, hydro, geothermal, or other renewable sources

to heat, cool, or generate electricity or other power.

Subd. 2.

Local reporting required.

The chief of the fire department of a city or town,

or in a city or town where no fire department exists, the mayor or town clerk, respectively,

must report to the state fire marshal on any fire that involves an alternative energy system.

Along with any other information required by the fire marshal, the report must include, to

the degree known, information on the cause, origin, and circumstances of each fire; the

amount of financial damage caused; and whether any person was injured or killed. Reports

required under this subdivision must be submitted as soon as practicable under the

circumstances.

Annually by February

15, the state fire marshal must submit a summary of the reports received under subdivision

2 for the preceding calendar year to the chairs and ranking minority members of the

legislative committees with jurisdiction over fire safety.
