HOUSE BILL NO. 1742

AN ACT TO REQUIRE THE DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS TO PROVIDE 1
BODY-WORN CAMERAS FOR ITS CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS UNDER CERTAIN 2
CIRCUMSTANCES; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES. 3
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI: 4
SECTION 1. (1) Subject to the availability of funds 5
specifically appropriated therefor, the Department of Corrections 6
shall provide body-worn cameras to each correctional officer 7
within the department when such officer is in the performance of 8
controlling, directing and monitoring the activities and movements 9
of inmates. The body-worn cameras shall be kept in good working 10
condition, worn on the uniform of any correctional officer while 11
the officer is on duty and shall be fully operational while the 12
officer is in the performance of the duties setout under this 13
subsection. 14
(2) For purposes of this section, "body-worn camera" means a 15
device that is worn by a law enforcement officer which has the 16
capability of electronically recording audio and video of the 17
activities of the correctional officer. 18

SECTION 2. This act shall take effect and be in force from 19
and after July 1, 2026. 20
