AN ACT TO AMEND SECTION 23-15-227, MISSISSIPPI CODE OF 1972, 1
TO AUTHORIZE MILEAGE REIMBURSEMENT FOR ANY POLL MANAGER OR OTHER 2
PERSON WHO WAS PRESENT AT THE VOTING PRECINCT AND WAS REQUIRED TO 3
RETURN TO THE REGISTRAR'S OFFICE AFTER THE POLLS CLOSE ON THE DAY 4
OF THE ELECTION; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES. 5
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI: 6
SECTION 1. Section 23-15-227, Mississippi Code of 1972, is 7
amended as follows: 8
23-15-227. (1) * * * The poll managers shall be each 9
entitled to One Hundred Twenty-five Dollars ($125.00) for each 10
election; however, the board of supervisors may, in its 11
discretion, pay the poll managers an additional amount not to 12
exceed Seventy-five Dollars ($75.00) per election. 13
(2) The poll manager who * * * carries to the place of 14
voting, away from the courthouse, the official ballots, ballot 15
boxes, pollbooks and other necessities, shall be allowed up to 16
Twenty-five Dollars ($25.00) for each voting precinct for * * * 17
that service. The poll manager who acts as returning officer 18
shall be allowed up to Twenty-five Dollars ($25.00) for each 19

voting precinct for that service. If a person who performs the 20
duties described in this subsection uses a privately owned motor 21
vehicle to perform them, he or she shall receive for each mile 22
actually and necessarily traveled in excess of ten (10) miles, the 23
mileage reimbursement rate allowable to federal employees for the 24
use of a privately owned vehicle while on official travel. If the 25
registrar requires any poll manager or other person who was 26
present at the voting precinct to return to the registrar's office 27
after the polls close on the day of the election, then that person 28
shall receive for each mile actually and necessarily traveled in 29
excess of ten (10) miles, the mileage reimbursement rate allowable 30
to federal employees for the use of a privately owned vehicle 31
while on official travel to the registrar's office. 32
(3) The compensation authorized in this section shall be 33
allowed by the board of supervisors, and shall be payable out of 34
the county treasury. 35
(4) The compensation provided in this section shall 36
constitute payment in full for the services rendered by the 37
persons named for any election, whether there be one (1) election 38
or issue voted upon, or more than one (1) election or issue voted 39
upon at the same time. 40
(5) The Secretary of State shall promulgate rules and 41
regulations as are necessary to ensure the safety of poll 42
managers, election commissioners, electors and their families at 43
the voting precincts during a COVID-19 public health risk or other 44

public health risk declared by the Governor where the appearance 45
of such persons may result in exposure to such risk or the 46
exposure of other persons to such risk. 47
SECTION 2. This act shall take effect and be in force from 48
and after July 1, 2026. 49
