AN ACT TO REQUIRE THE STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION TO DEVELOP A 1
CIVICS CURRICULUM TO BE TAUGHT IN THE PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOLS; TO 2
AMEND SECTION 37-13-151, MISSISSIPPI CODE OF 1972, TO REQUIRE THE 3
STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION TO DEVELOP A HIGH SCHOOL HOME ECONOMICS 4
CURRICULUM; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES. 5
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI: 6
SECTION 1. The State Board of Education shall develop a 7
civics curriculum to be incorporated into the existing curriculum 8
mandated for all public high schools. The civics curriculum must 9
be designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills that 10
are critical to the responsibilities of citizenship in the 11
constitutional democracy of the United States. The board shall 12
require each school district to implement the civics curriculum in 13
the 2027-2028 school year. 14
SECTION 2. Section 37-13-151, Mississippi Code of 1972, is 15
amended as follows: 16
37-13-151. * * * The State Board of Education shall develop 17
a home economics curriculum to be implemented in the public high 18
schools by all local school districts * * * in the 2026-2027 19

school year. The home economics curriculum must include, at a 20
minimum, coursework in responsible parenting and family living 21
skills. The * * * curriculum also must provide instruction to 22
prepare students to understand children's physical, mental, 23
emotional and social growth and development as well as to assume 24
responsibility for their care and guidance, with emphasis on 25
nutrition, emotional health and physical health. * * * 26
SECTION 3. This act shall take effect and be in force from 27
and after July 1, 2026. 28
