HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 18
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION DESIGNATING MARCH 12-19 AS "GIRL 1
SCOUT WEEK" IN THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI AND COMMENDING THE GIRL 2
SCOUTS OF THE USA ON THE ORGANIZATION'S 114TH ANNIVERSARY. 3
WHEREAS, the Girl Scouts of the USA traces its roots to March 4
1912, when Juliette Gordon Low of Savannah, Georgia, established a 5
Girl Guide troop after she met the founder of the Scout Movement, 6
Robert Baden-Powell, in the United Kingdom; and 7
WHEREAS, originally known as the Girl Guides of America, the 8
organization changed its name to the Girl Scouts of the United 9
States in 1913, and adopted its current name in 1947; and 10
WHEREAS, from its humble beginning with just 18 members, the 11
Girl Scouts of the USA has grown and expanded into the largest 12
Scouting organization for girls in the country, now composed of 13
over 1.1 million girl members and nearly 2 million total members; 14
and 15
WHEREAS, since 1912, the Girl Scouts of the USA has empowered 16
more than 50 million alumnae to develop invaluable life skills, 17

hone their personal strengths, find opportunities to serve their 18
communities, and build lifelong friendships; and 19
WHEREAS, the Girl Scouts of the USA teaches its members to 20
dream big and has increased girls' awareness of opportunities in 21
math, science, sports and technology, encouraging them to explore 22
these and many other fields of interest to broaden their horizons 23
and pursue their passions; and 24
WHEREAS, dedicated to working with key collaborators to build 25
a better world, the Girl Scouts of the USA has fulfilled its 26
mission through the generosity and dedication of adult volunteers, 27
mentors and community partners who have joined together to promote 28
compassion, courage, confidence, character, leadership, 29
entrepreneurship and active citizenship among young girls across 30
the great Magnolia State and throughout the nation; and 31
WHEREAS, March 12, 2026, marks the 114th anniversary of the 32
establishment of the Girl Scouts of the USA, offering a unique 33
opportunity to recognize the achievements of generations of Girl 34
Scouts throughout the organization's history and inspire the next 35
generation of bold, confident leaders in Scouting; and 36
WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize 37
and commend outstanding organizations, especially those such as 38
the Girl Scouts of the USA, an organization leading the way for 39
girls across the country as they find their confidence, use their 40
voices and make changes that affect the issues most important to 41
them: 42

ST: Girl Scouts of the USA; commend on its
114th anniversary and designate March 12-19 as
"Girl Scout Week."
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF 43
REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING 44
THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize the week of March 12-19, 45
2026, and in each succeeding year, as "Girl Scout Week" throughout 46
the State of Mississippi and commend the Girl Scouts of the USA on 47
the organization's 114th anniversary. 48
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be 49
furnished to Joan Reid and the members of Troop 4616, Service Unit 50
611, and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps. 51
