A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING MR. HERMAN SMITH FOR 1
OVER 20 YEARS OF OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO THE VICKSBURG BRIDGE 2
COMMISSION AND FLAG RAISING TRADITION. 3
WHEREAS, Mr. Herman Smith, former Superintendent of the 4
Vicksburg Bridge Commission of Warren County, Mississippi, is 5
being honored for his dedication and service to the Vicksburg 6
Bridge Commission and the flag raising tradition; and 7
WHEREAS, with his mechanical background, Mr. Smith was in 8
charge of the flag raising ceremonies and the day-to-day 9
operations of the Old Vicksburg Bridge and its related properties; 10
and 11
WHEREAS, in 2021, Mr. Smith was instrumental in the 12
replacement of the flagpole that sits on top of the center column 13
of the bridge, a truly outstanding accomplishment; and 14
WHEREAS, Mr. Smith stated that the flag raising has always 15
been an honor to him, especially when he is coming back from 16
Louisiana or when he takes a trip, he looks up to the flag, and he 17

has a lot of memories, and that was one of the biggest high points 18
of his job; and 19
WHEREAS, during retirement, Mr. Smith plans to oversee the 20
project of his church, Elevate Church, to turn the old Street 21
Clinic Building on McAuley and Grove Streets into a church; and 22
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to 23
honor extraordinary Mississippians, especially those such as Mr. 24
Herman Smith, whose dedication and service brings honor to his 25
community and to the State of Mississippi: 26
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF 27
REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby 28
recognize and commend Mr. Herman Smith for over 20 years of 29
outstanding service to the Vicksburg Bridge Commission and flag 30
raising tradition. 31
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be 32
furnished to Mr. Herman Smith and to the members of the Capitol 33
Press Corps. 34
