HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 14

A RESOLUTION DESIGNATING FEBRUARY 14, 2026, AS CONGENITAL 1
HEART DEFECT AWARENESS DAY. 2
WHEREAS, Congenital Heart Defects (CHDs) are the most common 3
type of birth defect, affecting approximately 1 in every 100 4
babies born; and 5
WHEREAS, CHDs are structural problems with the heart that are 6
present at birth, and these defects can range in severity from 7
mild to life-threatening and can affect the heart's chambers, 8
valves, or blood vessels, and while the exact cause of many CHDs 9
is unknown, several risk factors have been identified, including: 10
family history, genetic conditions, maternal health, and 11
environmental exposures; and 12
WHEREAS, early diagnosis and treatment are essential for 13
improving outcomes and quality of life, and many children and 14
adults with CHDs require lifelong care, including surgeries, 15
medications and ongoing monitoring, and raising awareness helps to 16
ensure that these individuals receive the support and resources 17
they need to thrive, and it also fosters a greater understanding 18

within our communities, reducing stigma and promoting inclusion; 19
and 20
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to 21
recognize and bring awareness to important health matters that 22
affect many Mississippians, especially those such as congenital 23
heart defects, celebrate the strength of those living with them, 24
and raise awareness about the importance of early detection and 25
ongoing care: 26
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF 27
REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby 28
designate February 14, 2026, as Congenital Heart Defect Awareness 29
Day. 30
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be 31
furnished to the members of the Capitol Press Corps. 32
