A RESOLUTION COMMENDING RETIRED MASTER SERGEANT CLYDE MOORE 1
ON HIS 24-YEAR MILITARY CAREER AND EXPRESSING GRATITUDE FOR HIS 2
DEDICATED SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY IN THE UNITED STATES AIR FORCE. 3
WHEREAS, retired Master Sergeant Clyde Moore, an 87-year-old 4
decorated Vietnam Veteran of Columbus, Mississippi, is a loyal 5
American who honorably dedicated 24 years, four months and 14 days 6
of his life to faithfully serve his country with distinction as a 7
member of the United States Air Force; and 8
WHEREAS, born in the segregated South in 1938, Master 9
Sergeant Moore was driven to enlist in the Air Force in 1954 in 10
Columbus by claiming to be 18 years old, although he was not quite 11
16, to support his family, particularly his grandmother who played 12
a significant role in his early life and lovingly encouraged him 13
throughout his training at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona; and 14
WHEREAS, during the Vietnam War, Master Sergeant Moore 15
successfully completed three separate in-country tours, a rare 16
feat only accomplished by a handful of airmen, beginning with his 17
first tour in 1964 through 1965 when he was involved in the battle 18

of Pleiku, without having received any combat training, after 19
arriving in Vietnam as a postal worker assigned to a critical Army 20
Ranger Special Forces Advisory compound; and 21
WHEREAS, in 1966 through 1967, Master Sergeant Moore returned 22
to Vietnam and was stationed in Saigon, where he experienced the 23
escalating conflict firsthand, before subsequently being sent back 24
to Vietnam for yet a third tour in 1970, serving a year in Da Nang 25
while increasingly dealing with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder 26
(PTSD) and the lingering effects of war; and 27
WHEREAS, often in unique and demanding situations, such as 28
when he worked with the Army in advisory roles where Air Force 29
personnel were scarce, Master Sergeant Moore was required to learn 30
quickly and operate in combat zones without the benefit of 31
standard combat training; and 32
WHEREAS, Master Sergeant Moore's impeccable service in 33
challenging roles, including as a postal worker and at Military 34
Assistance Command, Vietnam, (MACV) advisory compounds, is a 35
testament to his determination and adaptability in times of 36
intense combat, as well as his extraordinary commitment and brave 37
service across different facets of the Vietnam War, from 38
logistical support to direct advisory roles, all while overcoming 39
personal challenges and societal barriers as a Black man from the 40
segregated South; and 41
WHEREAS, in addition to his service in Vietnam, over the 42
course of his 24-year military career, Master Sergeant Moore 43

served in France, Japan, Guam and Italy, in various roles ranging 44
from postal worker to accounting and finance positions, and in 45
recognition of his exceptional contributions, he was awarded 46
several medals for his service and acknowledged by numerous 47
notable organizations, including the Vietnam Veterans of America 48
Magazine, the National Vietnam War Museum, the American Legion 49
Magazine, Silver Wings at Columbus Air Force Base, and various 50
news outlets such as the Columbus Commercial Dispatch and the 51
Associated Press; and 52
WHEREAS, totally and permanently disabled due solely to his 53
service-connected disabilities, Master Sergeant Moore retired from 54
the Air Force in 1978, moved to Denver, and enjoyed a successful 55
career as a car salesman, being Honda's top salesman in the nation 56
in 1986, before returning to the Magnolia State and settling into 57
his hometown of Columbus; and 58
WHEREAS, while Master Sergeant Moore is unique in that he is 59
the only one of 293,000 U.S. Airmen who served three separate 60
tours during the Vietnam War, in his retirement, he has shared his 61
experiences with others, highlighting the pride that comes from 62
serving one's country and helping fellow veterans suffering from 63
PTSD by sharing his struggles and efforts to overcome its effects; 64
and 65
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to 66
recognize and commend outstanding Mississippians such as retired 67
Master Sergeant Clyde Moore, whose courageous story, one that 68

members during the Vietnam era, is the epitome of a well-lived 70
life characterized by remarkable military service, personal 71
resilience and unwavering commitment to his fellow men and 72

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF 74
REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby 75
commend retired Master Sergeant Clyde Moore for his more than 24 76
years of dedicated service to our country, including during the 77
Vietnam War, as a member of the United States Air Force. FURTHER, 78
we do hereby express heartfelt gratitude to retired Master 79
Sergeant Clyde Moore for his service and extend sincerest wishes 80
for only the very best in the years to come. 81
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be 82
furnished to retired Master Sergeant Clyde Moore and to the 83
members of the Capitol Press Corps. 84
