HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 156
A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING COACH SHERRI COOLEY 1
FOR HER OUTSTANDING COACHING CAREER UPON THE OCCASION OF HER 2
RETIREMENT AS HEAD COACH OF THE LAUREL HIGH SCHOOL LADY TORNADOES 3
GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM. 4
WHEREAS, Laurel High School Lady Tornadoes Girls Basketball 5
Head Coach, Sherri Cooley, has ended her exceptional coaching 6
career on top; and 7
WHEREAS, Coach Cooley confirmed that the Lady Tornadoes' 8
Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Class 5A 9
championship game on March 7, 2026, would be her last game as she 10
is retiring from coaching; and 11
WHEREAS, recently, Coach Cooley helped lead Laurel to a state 12
title after the Lady Tornadoes beat Holmes County Central High 13
School, 52-26, and although she is in a current battle with breast 14
cancer and had to miss games during the 2025-2026 season, she said 15
she wanted to end her coaching career with one goal, which was at 16
the Mississippi Coliseum; and 17
WHEREAS, Coach Cooley finishes her exceptional career with 18
three state championships at Laurel (2026, 2024, 2021) over a 19

ST: Coach Sherri Cooley; recognize and commend
outstanding coaching career upon the occasion of
her retirement.
25-year coaching career, during which she spent six years with 20
Laurel and never had a losing record, and she also had three title 21
runner-up finishes with South Jones High School and was an 22
assistant when Northeast Jones High School won a title in 2004; 23
and 24
WHEREAS, Laurel ended the 2025-2026 season on a 20-game win 25
streak with a 32-2 record and outscored its opponents 2,148-981, 26
and they finished as the Clarion Ledger's No. 2 team, had Miss 5A 27
Basketball winner Kayllis Walker and two Dandy Dozen selections 28
with Ms. Kayllis Walker and Gracelyn Carmichael; and 29
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to 30
recognize and commend extraordinary individuals, especially those 31
such as Coach Sherri Cooley, whose dedication and perseverance 32
brings honor to Laurel High School, the Laurel community, and to 33
the State of Mississippi: 34
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF 35
REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby 36
recognize and commend Head Coach Sherri Cooley for her outstanding 37
coaching career upon the occasion of her retirement and extend 38
best wishes for continued success in her lighter days ahead. 39
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be 40
furnished to Head Coach Sherri Cooley and to the members of the 41
Capitol Press Corps. 42
